Me parece muy valiente por tu parte escribir sobre ti misma. Yo tenía treinta años cuando dejé la Obra, en 1976. Había estado diez años en el Opus Dei y durante casi todo ese tiempo había sido director o subdirector en dos centros. Y era subdirector cuando me escapé por una ventana trasera de la residencia, con dos maletas, y abandoné la Obra.Me marché sin pedir permiso a nadie ni discutí la cuestión de dejar la Obra. ¿Para qué preguntar cuando ya sabes cual va a ser la respuesta?. Había escuchado demasiadas confidencias como para hacerme ilusiones.
El primer año me resultó a la vez difícil y estimulante. Como no conocía a nadie más que hubiera dejado la Obra y con quien poder hablar me sentí muy solo. Doy gracias por el tiempo que pasé en la Obra y también doy gracias por tener el coraje de marcharme. He sido muy feliz durante los 29 años que han transcurrido desde que me fui. Y las cosas que aprendí en la Obra me han resultado muy útiles, tanto en mi vida familiar como profesional.
Brevemente te diré que tengo una esposa estupenda y tres hijos fenomenales y soy muy feliz.Acudo ocasionalmente a reuniones en centros del Opus Dei siempre tengo la sospecha de que los que me conocieron dentro de la Obra me miran a veces con cierta envidia. Quizás debiera tener el detalle de no parecer tan contento.

I think it is very brave of you to write about yourself. I was thirty when I left the Work in 1976. I had been in Opus Dei for ten years and nearly all that time I was either Director or Sub Director of two Centres. And I was still Sub Director when I climbed out of a rear window of the residence with two suitcases and left the Work. I didn't ask anyone's permission, nor brought up the subject of leaving the Work. Why ask the question when you already know what the answer is going to be? I had heard too many confidences to be under any illusions.
I found the first year both difficult and exhilarating at the same time, as I didn't know any one else who had left the Work that I could talk to, so I felt very alone. I give thanks for my time in the Work and also give thanks that I had the courage to leave. I have been extremely happy in the 29 years since I left. and the things that I learnt in the Work have proved to be very useful in both my family, and professional life.
In short I have a great wife three great kids and I am extremely happy. I occasionally go to the odd evening of recollection at centres of Opus Dei and I always get the suspicion that those who knew me in the Work, look at me sometimes with a certain envy. Perhaps I should have the good grace to not to look quite so happy.
